The water at the bottom of Upper Bear Creek Road is between seasons. Boating is down to weekends only, and skating has no start date yet. Meanwhile the five-month road project that has run through downtown Evergreen since May is down to its last pieces. So this October, most of what's going on at the foot of the road is in the storefronts along CO 74. Those businesses just came through a hard summer.
Each part of that is checkable. The Lake House at 29612 Upper Bear Creek Road says boat rentals run on weekends only after Labor Day, fall hours vary, and summer boating comes back in 2027. Evergreen Park & Recreation District updated its ice page on Sept. 28 and still had no opening day for the 2026/2027 skating season. The district will post season details once a date is set. As of Sept. 29, the Colorado Department of Transportation said most of the downtown work on CO 74 was complete.
What the paving crews leave behind
The project covers CO 74 from Evergreen Lake down to Lair o' the Bear Park, mile points 6.9 to 12.5. CDOT and its prime contractor, Brannan Sand and Gravel, started on May 4 with a $6.5 million budget. Most of that money goes to a new road surface through asphalt milling and overlay. The scope also includes utility upgrades, wider shoulders, replacement guardrail, new curb ramps that meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and deck repairs on the bridge over Bear Creek.
The downtown stretch got a different schedule from the rest of the corridor. Milling and paving at the west end of the zone, through Evergreen itself, ran overnight from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. to keep daytime impacts off downtown. In places the highway narrowed to 12 feet, and sidewalk access downtown closed now and then, with pedestrian detours. The new curb ramps were planned for downtown in particular. CDOT's release said they would improve pedestrian access through downtown Evergreen. Those are the sidewalks people will walk this month to get between restaurants and shops.
The finish line is close, but it is not here yet. On Sept. 29, CDOT told FOX31 that crews would spend about two more days on final striping and on a sinkhole they found during the work. CDOT said the whole project should wrap up in late October or early November, and all remaining work depends on the weather. CDOT's project page still shows a May-to-October 2026 timeline. The September estimate is the newer one, so a few cones on CO 74 into November would still be on schedule.
The summer the storefronts absorbed
Downtown businesses carried most of the cost of that schedule. In late September, FOX31 found flooded parking, cones and no-parking signs had become familiar sights downtown. Owners described four to five months of harder parking and access.
Josh Work, head chef at Wildflower Cafe, put numbers on it:
"It varies day to day, but we're consistently down 20, 30, sometimes 40% compared to last year. Fortunately, we're keeping the lights on, but it's a real hassle when people feel like they can't come down here and park."
He also told FOX31 he had heard a string of finish dates, first Sept. 14, then Oct. 14, and then "hopefully in the next two days." Gus Mitchell, head chef at Cactus Jack's Saloon and Grill, said finishing the project would be a relief for businesses that had spent months working around construction.
A drop of 20 to 40% compared with a normal year shows how much downtown depends on people who can drive in and park easily. October is the first month since spring when that should mostly be true again. It is also one of the lake's thinnest months.
Why the lake can't fill the gap this month
In other seasons the lake is the reason to stop at the foot of Upper Bear Creek Road. Right now it is in its fall shoulder season. For anyone planning around the water, here is where things stand:
- Boating: weekends only after Labor Day, with fall hours that vary. The Lake House page says summer boating comes back in 2027.
- Skating: no opening day announced as of EPRD's Sept. 28 update, and ice access depends on weather and conditions.
- Updates: the boating and skating hotline at 720-880-1391 has current openings and hours.
EPRD's Halloween programming is up the hill at Buchanan Park, not at the lake. The Nightmare at 1520 haunted house runs select nights through Oct. 31, with entry directions via 1521 Bergen Parkway. EPRD rates it PG17. The Trick or Treat Trail is on the Buchanan Park ball fields on Friday, Oct. 30, from 4 to 8 p.m. Each trick-or-treater needs a ticket. On Oct. 10, EPRD also holds its first Fall Fishing Classic at the Buchanan Park Fishing Ponds. Registration is online in advance, and the event is capped at 60 anglers.
None of those events are at the lake end of Upper Bear Creek Road, so this month the closest things to do are downtown.
Downtown's October, in order
The Downtown Evergreen calendar has a full stretch for the second week of October, while the road is close to done. Here are the listings by date:
- Wednesday, Oct. 7: Jeopardy! Bar League Trivia at Cactus Jack's, 6:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Oct. 8: free family bingo at Revival Brews from 4 to 7 p.m., then Jonathan's Open Mic at Cactus Jack's at 8 p.m.
- Friday, Oct. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 10: the Evergreen Players perform "Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors," 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. both nights.
- Saturday, Oct. 10: Customer Appreciation Night at Marmalade Artisan Jewelry from 3 to 7 p.m., and live music at Revival Brews from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 10 is also Second Saturday. On the second Saturday of every month, downtown shops and galleries stay open late for a Sip & Stroll, and many offer sales and discounts. This month's theme is "Spooky Sips," described as a pumpkin-spiked sip and shop, and the organizers ask people to dress up in something spooky. That puts Marmalade's appreciation night, live music at Revival Brews, late shop hours and the Saturday "Dracula" show all on the same evening. It is the busiest downtown night on the October calendar.
Second Saturdays runs all year, and none of these events were set up as a response to the construction. They do land in the first weeks when crews are mostly gone from downtown.
A new dinner option on CO 74
One business is opening into this window. Creekside Cellars Winery & Restaurant, at 28036 CO-74, was on the Evergreen Chamber's ribbon-cutting list for Sept. 30 and says it is now serving dinner. Its posted hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday. The listing doesn't say whether the business itself is new. It does show that dinner service on the highway started just as the paving was winding down.
For a Friday or Saturday that already includes the 7:30 "Dracula" curtain, the 9 p.m. weekend close gives time for an early dinner before the show. Wildflower Cafe and Cactus Jack's, the two kitchens that told FOX31 about their summer, are both on the same stretch of road the crews spent five months resurfacing.
The weeks before ice
Until EPRD sets a skating date, the lake end of Upper Bear Creek Road offers weekend boat rentals on variable fall hours, with the hotline as the source for what's open. For the same stretch of fall, downtown's late shop hours, theater, trivia and live music are the closest things on the calendar. Final striping and remaining corridor work may still bring short delays into November, depending on the weather, and COtrip has live conditions before a drive into town.
